PROJECTS
My work often falls in the borderland between disciplines and it is often project-based. I have placed work here that relies on my capacity between and beyond the main areas of Composer, Conductor, Vocalist, and Scholar. These projects are also almost always collaborations. This is really the best way to understand my work over the last twenty years.
Current Projects
The Furies: A Laptopera (2020)
The Furies: A Laptopera is a retelling of the Greek tragedy Electra. This retelling explores central questions regarding how communities escape from cycles of violence, the role of guilt and shame in community identity, personal responsibility, how justice interfaces with cycles of violence, and redemption. The artistic medium of the laptop orchestra both serves to recast the traditional instrumental role in a new kind of operatic medium (the “laptopera”) that reimagines the potential of instrument building to support dramatic elements and character relationships—while simultaneously positing critical questions about technology in our lives presently, both in its promise to help us flourish and in its perils to perpetuate and amplify the existing cycles of violence in our world today. Created in collaboration with the Stanford Laptop Orchestra (SLOrk). Premiere to be rescheduled due to COVID-19.

Collaborations with visual artist Joell Jones (1998-2008)
Over a period of about ten years, I worked closely with visual artist Joell Jones to create soundtracks for her artworks. This collaboration allowed me to believe that I could become a composer and helped support my work in electronic music and multimedia. We made three large collaborative works together including The Mountain Room (1999), The Big City (2002), and The Emotions (2006). Her deep thoughtfulness about life, her commitment as a mother, and her work ethic have been an inspiration to me over these last twenty-two years.
